About Verdetto

Verdetto is a free QR and barcode scanner for Android with one job: show what a code contains before anything opens, check it on the phone, and leave the decision to you. The name is Italian for verdict, pronounced "ver-DET-oh".

The mission

A QR code is a link you cannot read, and many scanners open it the instant they see it. Verdetto exists so that reading a code is an act of looking rather than trusting: the address, its site first and the whole of it a tap away, the checks beside it, the result in one line, and never the word "safe", because no list can promise that. The decision stays with the person holding the phone.

What it stands on

Free and complete: every check and every scanning feature is in the free app. No ads, no accounts, no analytics, no tracking by Verdetto. Every built-in check runs on the phone; the warning list arrives signed and is checked there; the online lookups sit behind one switch, on by default and off in a tap. The people who use it pay for it if they choose, in the app or through the routes on the support page, and no scanning or safety feature is locked behind that.

Made in the open

The scanner engine (Apache 2.0) and the app (GPL v3 or later) are published under open licenses. The safety list is compiled in public from named sources; the sources and the rules are public in the pipeline's repository, and anyone can question an entry through the report page. The name and the mark stay Verdetto's under the Community License, so a copy that drops these values cannot wear the name.
