Verdetto Community License
This is a trademark license. It grants no copyright permission and adds no condition to the licenses of the code. The app's code is licensed under the GNU General Public License, version 3 or later; the scanner core under the Apache License 2.0; the safety-list pipeline under the MIT License. Those licenses already reserve trademark rights (GPL section 7(e), Apache section 6); this document is that reservation, plus a conditional permission to use the marks.
1. The marks
The name Verdetto, the app title "Verdetto: QR & Barcode Scanner", the QR icon, the wordmark, the splash mark, the screenshots and store material, and the "Built on Verdetto" badge. A United States trademark application for VERDETTO is pending (serial no. 50092495); rights in the marks also arise from their use in commerce.
2. What needs no permission
- Using, changing and distributing the code under its own licenses.
- Saying, truthfully and without suggesting endorsement, that software is a fork of Verdetto, is compatible with Verdetto, or uses the verdetto-core scanning engine, and reproducing the engine's NOTICE file as the Apache License requires. Plain words, with a note that the product is not affiliated with or endorsed by Verdetto; no icon, no wordmark.
- Naming the project in reviews, articles, comparisons, package descriptions and academic work.
3. What this license permits, and on what conditions
A build may be called Verdetto, use the icon or wordmark, or show the "Built on Verdetto" badge only with prior written approval under this license, and only while it meets all of the following.
Product standards (quality control):
- It passes the published Verdetto conformance suite for the version it is built from: the symbology matrix, the precision gates and the safety-list checks, with the results recorded.
- It ships no proprietary advertising, analytics or telemetry library, and no change that disables a check, a warning or a notice the original shows.
- Verdetto may request a copy of any build that carries the marks and review it against these terms at any time, and keeps a record of approvals and reviews.
Values:
- No advertising. No ads of any kind, no sponsored content, no promoted results, no interstitials, no "remove ads" purchase.
- No tracking. No analytics, telemetry, advertising identifiers or fingerprinting. Nothing leaves the device except the lookups the user can see and switch off, as the privacy policy describes them.
- Everything works for free. Every scan, decode and check is free for every user, with no feature gate, trial, subscription or paywall. A voluntary support purchase that unlocks nothing needed to use the app is allowed.
- An honest interface. No fake buttons, no ads dressed as controls, no forced or timed prompts, no rating or share nags, no pre-ticked consent, no dark patterns.
- No safety claims. Never tell a user a code, link or site is safe, secure, protected, verified or clean. Show what was checked and what was found; the user decides.
- Notices kept. Copyright and license notices, third-party attributions and the source-code link stay in the app and its listing, as the code licenses require.
4. How the badge is shown
"Built on Verdetto" is shown in the form published at verdettoqr.com/brand: the wordmark unaltered, at a legible size, linked to that site's home page where the surface allows a link, never as the product's own name or icon, and never modified, recolored, animated or combined with another mark.
5. Term and ending
The permission is free of charge, worldwide and non-exclusive. It ends automatically for any build that stops meeting section 3 or section 4, and Verdetto may end it on thirty days' notice for any reason. When it ends, the name, icon, wordmark and badge come off the build and its listings within thirty days. The code licenses are unaffected.
6. No other rights
No endorsement, partnership or affiliation is implied by an approved build. No right is granted to register any Verdetto mark or a confusingly similar one, or to use the marks in a domain name, account name or package name. This is a trademark license, not a certification of anyone's goods. It is governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States.
7. Plain summary
Take the code freely. Wear the name only with approval and only while you keep the standards and the values. Lose them, lose the name, keep the code.
